The world's last wooden whaling ship is scheduled to visit the Whaling City next year, and Mystic Seaport is wondering what residents would like to see when the ship pulls into port.
Mystic Seaport is looking for feedback from residents in planning programs, exhibits, and hands-on activities to accompany the ship's visit. People may assist the museum with this planning by taking this survey.
The museum has been restoring the Charles W. Morgan, which was built in 1841 in New Bedford, Mass. The ship completed 37 voyages in its 80-year career and is the second oldest American ship afloat. The museum plans to launch the Charles W. Morgan in July of 2013 and embark on a tour to visit New London, New Bedford, Boston, and other ports in 2014.
Correction: The original article said the ship's tour would occur in 2013. It will occur in 2014 following a 2013 launch.
I look forward to the Morgan visit. My first visit to the ship was the late 1940's. It is a national treasure. But let's not romanticize whaling, even here in the Whaling City, It was what it was. Better than clubbing baby seals and bull fighting I suppose. Wouldn't want to be known as the "Baby Seal City" or the "Bull City."
