Street Closures, Parking Ban Remain In Effect In New London

Residents asked to stay off roads as crews work to assess damage

New London remains under the parking ban rules used during winter storms and a number of streets will be kept closed as emergency responders begin to assess damage from Hurricane Sandy.

The parking ban prohibits people from parking in the downtown area. Downtown residents may park in the Water Street Parking Garage.

"We are urging all residents, specifically in the south end of town, to stay off the road," Mayor Daryl Finizio's office said. "When residents are out of their homes, they are hindering emergency personnel and work crews from fully assessing damage and clearing debris."

The administration has responded well in this emergency. We need to keep off the roads. That is difficult for someone like me who really wants to see for himself, but we don;t need to clutter up the streets with people just looking around. Our first storm in years in this end of town where power didn't go off. Thanks to the crews who worked so hard in the last few months to trim the trees on upper Williams St.

...and complaints about overtime on the part of police, fire and public works seems to have diminished in direct proportion to wind speeds.

Mr. Clark, The complaints are about the way the city is administered. No about the workers. The fact that we paid so many workers to stay home is crap. If they are non essential, then why do they work for the city in this lousy economic environment? Non essential means we do not need them.

Actually Clark, this is what overtime is suppose to be used for. In case of an emergency not to go to a meeting or just to pad your pension. The Union guys are doing a fantastic job in the city and that is their job. Most of the complaints about overtime are not towards Union guys during an emergency it's against salaried workers and Dept. heads. You know that but it seems you just want to twist the truth. Did you ever think that if they cut the overtime in salaried dept.'s that they probably could hire a few more guys in Public works and the police dept. Chief Ackleys overtime from last year could have hired 2 people in her dept. alone. HMMMM something to think about.

The on;y city workers I see are just joy riding up and down my street.

@ emily...is this meant to be a joke or are you really that ignorant
Clark van der Lyke October 31, 2012 at 11:56 pm
I guess I don't know much about overtime. Never got paid for any in my 20 years as a department head and I think I only took lunch once or twice a month. Don't assume everybody did or does. As to essential? Not every job is essential in an emergency. I guess they should only come into work when you need something.

Clark I did not accuse you personally of abusing overtime. I apologize if I sounded that way. You do know who I am talking about, I know you do. How did we go from 1.3 million in overtime to 3.5 million in one year. Some people are taking advantage of the tax payers and the city. I think now that people are watching it won't happen again.

The mayor and council president will lie and cheat to protect the mayor's unqualified and dishonestRead More people. The council and the council leadership is supposed to act as a check and balance in this new form of government. Mr. Smith is one of those dishonest people. It is sad that this person can be so dishonest and that the so called leaders in the community back the dishonest person rather than standing up for the taxpayers and people that really do live here and pay taxes. As a finance director Mr. Smith knows the importance of the proper tax town for vehicles, so he cannot claim ignorance. Is he is breaking the law because the taxes in Windham are lower or because he truly lives in Windham?
