Coast Guard air crew in Florida helps with engine repairs to tall ship prior to start of OpSail
The got a special delivery by air on Sunday as part of its efforts to repair its diesel engine for OpSail 2012.
The tall ship, which is in New Orleans at the start of the War of 1812 bicentennial commemoration, will sail along several Gulf of Mexico and East Coast ports this spring and summer. Prior to arrival, however, the ship's engineers noticed minor leakage from the saltwater pump.
According to a press release from the Coast Guard, the leakage worsened and the ship had to remain in port in Key West, Fla. A 33-foot special purpose craft delivered a replacement pump on Friday, but did not fit properly. However, engineers worked through the evening to make temporary repairs that would allow the ship to proceed to New Orleans.
