Reminder: Columbus Day Observed Monday

Federal holiday has been in place since 1934

It’s easy to overlook, unless you’re one of the lucky workers who gets the day off, but Monday is Columbus Day.

The holiday is observed across all levels of government, so several services will not be available tomorrow. Municipal services take the day off (except police and fire, of course) and both the and will be closed. The federal and state services in Shaw’s Cove will also take the day off. Banks and the are also closed.

In addition, students and faculty in the and other schools in town have the day off. students and cadets have no classes, but students at return to a normal schedule today after a four-day fall break.

According to the Library of Congress, the holiday commemorates the expedition of Christopher Columbus, specifically the sighting of land in the Western Hemisphere on Oct. 12, 1492. The first recorded celebration of that day in the United States took place on the tercentennial in 1792, while President Franklin D. Roosevelt declared Oct. 12 a federal holiday in 1934; observance of the holiday has since moved to the second Monday in October.
