New London Tube: Time Lapse Blizzard

Video shows snowfall accumulating on State Street

One of the videos making the rounds after the weekend snowstorm is a time-lapse shot of a public clock counting off the hours as snow steadily drifts up around it, nearly burying it by the morning. And now New London has its own opportunity for a viral time-lapse hit.

Filmed from high up in 300 State Street, the camera in this video is pointed east along State Street. A timer in the lower right counts through the day on Friday, into the wee hours of the night, through the continuing wind and snow on Saturday morning, and finally as the storm clears out and evening falls again.

The activity on the street peters out on Friday evening, at about the time the snow accumulation starts to outpace the plows. A few dogged efforts to clear the walk in front of the Mohican are successful enough to be visible on the video, though they have to be done multiple times to clear new snowfall. In the early morning hours of Saturday, an ambulance appears in a flash in front of the Mohican and is gone just as quickly.

The sun starts to become more apparent on Saturday morning, but perhaps the most striking shot occurs in the final seconds of the video. The clouds overhead retreat into the distance, leaving blue sky behind as the setting sun casts lengthening shadows on the downtown buildings. Nightfall brings a resurgence of bright lights and traffic, albeit at a toned down rate as fewer cars try to brave the streets.
