Millstone operated at 50 percent throughout the length of the storm, although it did lose power to its office buildings and the decommissioned Unit 1, Millstone Spokesman Ken Holt said.
Power was restored to the site at midnight, Holt said. The plant was having trouble cooling Unit 1’s spent nuclear fuel (which would take almost a month of no cooling to cause damage), although that is being fixed soon, Holt said.
The two active power stations were brought down to 50 percent activity before the storm started, Holt said. This was done to avoid a more traumatic impact to the grid, because if they were at 100 percent and had to be shut down in the middle of the storm, it would have a larger affect, Holt said.
Unit 2 is still operating at 50 percent, and Unit 3 is operating at 70 percent. They should be fully operational soon, Holt said.
