Mayor Finizio Advises Against New London Trick-Or-Treating

Continuing hazardous conditions around city lead to recommendation

Citing continuing hazardous road conditions and power restoration efforts following Hurricane Sandy, Mayor Daryl Finizio said this afternoon that he is advising residents against Halloween trick-or-treating tonight.

"The Mystic Aquarium has open trick or treating tonight from 5-7 p.m. if you would like to take your kids out," said Finizio. "Otherwise, in keeping with other communities, you may consider trick or treating on November 7 as other towns have done."

The mayor's office previously recommended that parents should accompany their children for trick-or-treating and that anyone taking part in the activity should stay clear of areas where power remains out due to potential hazards such as fallen trees and wires. Finizio said New London does not have an official trick-or-treating event or hours for the holiday.

"Halloween is not a government sanctioned event and I have no power to 'cancel' it," he said. "As I stated yesterday (and earlier today) whenever you go out, use common sense."
