New York Fishing Licenses

The New York Department of Environmental Conservation has established an online marine angler registry, and you may register for free at this link. Connecticut marine waters fishing licenses are valid in Long Island Sound, but anglers must be registered in New York to fish in other marine waters of the Empire State.

Striped Bass

Striped bass measuring over 50 inches long and weighing over 50 pounds are being recorded, with fishermen catching keepers even when they target bluefish with diamond jigs in deep water. Places to catch stripers include the Watch Hill area, the Race, Wilderness Point off Fishers Island, Plum Gut, the outflow at Millstone, Bartlett Reef, Black Point, Pigeon Rip (area north of Plum Island), the DEP fishing pier on lower Connecticut River (DEP fishing pier), Long Sand Shoal, the reefs off Guilford and Branford, New Haven Harbor (Sandy Point), Charles Island area to Milford New York DEC Point, the Housatonic River, Stratford Shoal/Middle Ground, Penfield Reef, and the rocky reefs around the Norwalk Islands.

Bluefish

Bluefish have improved slightly, usually measuring in the neighborhood of five to 10 pounds. These fish can be found in the same areas as striped bass.

Summer Flounder (Fluke)

Fluke fishing is fair, with small fish being reported. Fishing spots include Gardiners Bay, the Peconic Bays, the beaches on the south side of Fishers Island, north shore of Long Island in New York waters, the lower Thames River, Niantic Bay/ Black Point area, Long Sand Shoal, Westbrook and Clinton Harbors, Falkner Island area, off the New Haven breakwaters, Stratford Shoal/Middle Ground, the Port Jefferson area in New York, and Norwalk Harbor.

Scup (Porgy)

Fishing is rated fair on the reefs.
