Malloy Unable To Attend Irish Parade

Lt. Gov. Nancy Wyman Will Fill In

Governor Dannel Malloy announced this afternoon that a trip to Washington, D.C. will prevent him from on March 17.

Malloy had originally planned to be the grand marshal of the St. Patrick's Day event. However, he will be in the nation's capital to attend events at the Vice President's house as well as the White House.

Malloy said the reason for the trip is an appeal of President Barack Obama's decision to award federal emergency funds for six of Connecticut's eight countries, including New London County. Malloy announced earlier in the day that the six counties were found to qualify for federal aid under a disaster declaration related to a Jan. 12 snowstorm that led to $14 million in eligible snow removal and other costs. Malloy said he is appealing the decision to seek aid for Middlesex and Windham counties, which were not included in the declaration.

“I was very much looking forward to leading the New London St. Patrick’s Day Parade,” said Malloy in a press release. “Unfortunately business in Washington on behalf of Connecticut will take me away from the state. However, I know the citizens of New London and the surrounding area will have a wonderful time with Lieutenant Governor Wyman. I wish everyone involved a very Happy St. Patrick’s Day.”

Malloy added that the trips to Washington, D.C. also give him an opportunity to talk to federal officials about issues facing Connecticut.
