Eagle Returns To New London On Friday

Coast Guard training ship completing 75th anniversary European tour

The Coast Guard barque Eagle is almost home. After a summer voyage to ports in Europe and along the eastern seaboard of North America, the tall ship will return to New London on Friday.

Eagle is scheduled to arrive at 9:30 a.m. at the pier it . The ship, which was taken from Germany as a war prize and commissioned as a Coast Guard vessel in 1946, has been in New London serving as a training vessel ever since. The summer trip celebrated its 75th anniversary and included about 250 cadets.

The Eagle made stops in Waterford, Ireland; Hamburg, Germany; London, England; Reykjavik, Iceland; Halifax, Nova Scotia; Boston, Mass.; New Bedford, Mass.; and New York City, N.Y. Along the way, the crew visited the ship’s 1936 birthplace at the in Hamburg, laid a wreath at the site of the sunken World War II Coast Guard cutter off Iceland, and took part in a naturalization ceremony for 10 members of the military.
