By M. Dirk Langeveld

1. Mostly sunny with a high temperature of 44 degrees today, dropping to 30 degrees overnight. Sunrise is 6:28 a.m., sunset is 7:16 p.m.

2. Today’s the big day! Patch has gotten a new look and a more interactive setup to make it easier to blog, post announcements and events, and otherwise let people know what’s going on in New London. Find out more in the welcome article.

3. The Parks and Recreation Commission meets tonight to learn more about a proposal for New London to be one of 26 communities across the country receiving a playground dedicated to the memory of the victims of December’s shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School. The meeting starts at 5 p.m. at the Senior Center.

4. The Chamber of Commerce of Eastern Connecticut holds a regular Business After Hours event tonight, starting at 5:30 p.m. at the Coast Guard Academy Alumni Association. A new member orientation starts at the campus at 4 p.m. Admission is $15 for members and $25 for non-members; call ahead to reserve a spot, as it’s another $5 for walk-ins.

5. It’s the 45th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” speech. King delivered the speech in support of a strike by Memphis sanitation workers and said there would be difficulties ahead for the civil rights movement and that he might not be able to see its success. He was assassinated the next day.
