CL&P: Polling Places Will Be Ready for Election Day

Utility defends its performance as frustration grows amid 225,000 customers still without power.

The 100 or so polling places in CL&P's territory still without power should be operational by Election Day, William Quinlan, a senior vice president, said Thursday evening.

Restoring those locations is a high priority for the utility, Quinlan said. If some are still without power by Tuesday, CL&P will provide backup generation so that people can vote, he said.

CL&P, the state's largest utility, still had to restore power to 225,000 customers on Thursday evening. On Thursday morning, the company issued a "projection restoration" and said it would have 98 percent of customers restored by Monday or Tuesday. It would not be more specific about the day or time, whereas smaller United Illuminating gave a projection of 95 percent restoration by Monday at midnight.

The number of external lineman working on the outages was 1,080 on Wednesday and topped 1,500 on Thursday. CL&P has commitments from hundreds more as well, Quinlan said, and hoped to reach its goal of 2,000 extra lineman.

Before Quinlan spoke, Gov. Dannel P. Malloy said he had heard of several instances in which citizens had yelled at or harassed lineman and he asked that people "let them do their job."

While Quinlan said he had not personally heard those complaints, he did say it was a safety issue for the workers to be distracted.

"These folks are human," he said. "I do understand the frustration, but don't take it out on the line workers."

Quinlan, who said he was also personally without power, said CL&P would begin to publish divisional restoration projections that give more specifics as early as Thursday night. Those reports will get more specific as the restoration effort goes on, he said.

I would like to say "Thank you" to everyone at CL&P. Given the enormity of this storm, and all that entails in determining damage and priorities, I think they have done an outstanding and well-organized job. With all the resources from other states diverted to the most critical areas of NY/NJ, we are lucky. I don't enjoy it, but perspective is important!

Good job being the first comment on this article Gerogiana. Maybe we can have a long list of commenters who are appreciative of how good they have it compared to some of the other devastated communities. Refreshing change from the last two strings of negative posters. (No I do not have power.)

I was amazed and delighted that power came back on at noon on Tuesday, as my experience over the decades is that my road is one of the last to regain power after a storm...usually a week. My neighborhood has been a shining light in a dark sea around us.
I see no change in recovery planning on the part of management of the big electric companies, or the great service provided by the workers. The workers do the best they can, but management still says it will take a week to restore power. Another commenter on another article asked how we could all switch to Groton Utilities, who consistantly have their customers back on line days before CL&P. Good idea!

I thank CL&P for all their hard and steady work. I also applaud Ed Haberek, Jr. for his devotion to the residents of Stonington. Job well done, Ed.

The mayor and council president will lie and cheat to protect the mayor's unqualified and dishonestRead More people. The council and the council leadership is supposed to act as a check and balance in this new form of government. Mr. Smith is one of those dishonest people. It is sad that this person can be so dishonest and that the so called leaders in the community back the dishonest person rather than standing up for the taxpayers and people that really do live here and pay taxes. As a finance director Mr. Smith knows the importance of the proper tax town for vehicles, so he cannot claim ignorance. Is he is breaking the law because the taxes in Windham are lower or because he truly lives in Windham?
