Pfizer establishes annual scholarships for 13 high schools in New London County and Westerly, RI

In partnership with Pfizer, Inc., the Community Foundation of Eastern Connecticut announces the establishment of the Pfizer Scholarship Fund.  This collaboration was born from Pfizer’s commitment to investing in the communities where its employees live and work. Beginning in the spring of 2014, the scholarship fund will provide a $1,000 scholarship award to a graduating senior from each of thirteen high schools in New London County and Westerly, RI, who will attend a college or university to pursue studies in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) fields. The Community Foundation will administer the scholarship funds and facilitate the selection process.

“This scholarship fund will help area students pursue their educational goals at a time when so many of them are facing significant financial obstacles. It is terrific of Pfizer to invest in the future of local young people in this way, especially to inspire those interested in going into the STEM fields,” said Maryam Elahi, president and CEO of  the Community Foundation.

“Pfizer is proud to continue our longstanding support for local education, especially in the sciences.  As a company devoted to biomedical innovation, we encourage young people in all fields of study that will create a healthier future for society,” said Rod MacKenzie, Group Senior Vice President and Head of Pharmatherapeutics R&D for Pfizer Inc, and Site Director, Groton Laboratories.
