Sweetie's Bakery and Cafe Takes The Cupcake

Bank Street eatery wins Readers' Choice poll for best cupcake

For the latter part of this week, we had our own version of Cupcake Wars going on in a . After earlier in the week, five businesses were contending for the honor but two recently opened bakeries quickly jumped out in a race for first: and .

In the end, Sweetie's was able to pull ahead, garnering 92 of the 206 votes cast (44 percent). Little Sister's wasn't far behind, earning 75 votes (36 percent). Also nominated were (27 votes, 13 percent), (seven votes, three percent) and (five votes, two percent).

The pink-framed cafe on Bank Street opened last year and is hard to miss. Their website declares that the baked goods are made with butter and other quality ingredients and never any "preservatives or any of those weird ingredients listed on nutrition labels that you can't pronounce." They also offer sandwiches, salads, and Italian pasta dishes on Sunday like grandma used to make.

"Sweetie's on Bank Street is the best," commented reader Pat Sullivan. "I travel from the Hartford area to get cupcakes as well as macaroons. I have yet to have a cupcake from Sweetie's that was not 'Out of this world.'"

Congratulations to Sweetie's and all the nominees!

Having Sweetie's open up almost right across the street from the Custom House Maritime Museum has been the greatest enhancement to 'life in New London' I can remember!

The mayor and council president will lie and cheat to protect the mayor's unqualified and dishonestRead More people. The council and the council leadership is supposed to act as a check and balance in this new form of government. Mr. Smith is one of those dishonest people. It is sad that this person can be so dishonest and that the so called leaders in the community back the dishonest person rather than standing up for the taxpayers and people that really do live here and pay taxes. As a finance director Mr. Smith knows the importance of the proper tax town for vehicles, so he cannot claim ignorance. Is he is breaking the law because the taxes in Windham are lower or because he truly lives in Windham?
