Peace Corps, Rock & Read, and Art = Gift

This Week in New London, Nov. 23-29

 

It seems that with thoughts of turkey and stuffing are dancing around in everyone’s head, as there are very few events going on in the next week. However, has pulled together some interesting items for their weekly roundup of things to do.

It’s so sedate, in fact, that reading is the main focus. hosts Rock & Read on Saturday, bringing in a number of family-friendly events. From noon to 4 p.m., you can listen to music by Steve Elci and Friends, hear local author Anna Westbrook read from her book You Can’t Read This Book, and participate in a free origami class. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Peace Corps, the welcomes John LaPlante, one of the organization’s oldest volunteers, to discuss the service and his book, 27 Months in the Peace Corps: My Story, Unvarnished. This presentation starts at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.

When it comes to music, helps get things started on Friday evening when local musician visits the restaurant. He’ll bring out his acoustic guitar from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. Live music also joins the vendors at the , running from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday at . Sunny Morning LaLa brings their regular set to the at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday. Finally, Liz Almanzar hosts her regular at at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday and Monday.

When it comes to art, there aren’t any openings this time around. However, New London Main Street does recommend a couple of exhibits to check out during regular gallery hours. has over 100 images in their Holiday Photography Exhibition and will keep them up through Christmas Eve. brings back as well as work from students. These run through Dec. 23, and include affordable pieces of artwork you might consider as a present for the holiday season.
