More Hygienic XXXIII, Team Spirit Skate, and Slap Happy

This Week in New London, Feb. 1-7

Hygienic XXXIII continues to be a big supplier of events for the upcoming things to do as chosen by . It starts tonight with a showing of , a documentary on artists in Berlin following the fall of the Berlin Wall, and a discussion with the filmmakers; this starts at 8 p.m. at the . At 6 p.m. on Friday, opens its “Photo-Genic” exhibit, gathering the finds of photographers and poets who were sent on a scavenger hunt to find pictures and poems related to a series of words. An hour later, the Crocker House Ballroom hosts “Fashion in the Ballroom,” a display of clothing put together by several designers. Finally, a group of people trying to put together seven one-act plays in 24 hours show the fruits of their labor at the Mayfly Playhouse, with the one-night performance starting at 8 p.m. on Saturday at the Crocker House Ballroom.

Aside from Children of the Wall, the offers plenty of movie options with their Winter Film Festival. The first choice is , showing at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. This is followed by at the same time on Saturday and on Tuesday; all showings have a $4 admission price. The is also showing the anime film Castle in the Sky at 3 p.m. as part of their Free First Saturday activities.

When it comes to music, you get a second crack at the Bonsai Concerts tonight at 6 p.m. Gabriel Kastelle and Mattias Lundblad do some Swedish-Finnish violin duos at the Violin Training Museum, located at 300 State Street; use the rear stairway to attend. A production of Puccini’s by the Teatro Liricio d’Europa starts at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday; tickets are $32 to $60. at the starts at 8 p.m. with Geoff Kaufman and Atwater-Donnelly; tickets are $10 for students, $17 in advance, and $20 at the door.

There are also a couple of art openings on Saturday. The work of artist will be on display at the , with a reception from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. welcomes Elisha Schauer’s “Slap Happy: A Collection of Eclectic Creatures” with a 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. opening. You might want to get there early; is doing the catering, and those cupcakes aren't going to last forever.
