Millstone Wants Malloy To Keep His Promise

Dominion Hopes Tax Really Will Be Temporary

Connecticut residents pay the most for electricity in the continental United States, paying 17.33 cents per kilowatt hour, compared to the United States average of 11.43 cents.

And that number will only increase, unless the governor and the state legislature keep their promise, Kevin Hennessy, Dominion’s director of governmental affairs for New England, said Monday.

Last year, Gov. Dannel Malloy and the state legislature increased taxes on Millstone by . That tax, per promise of the governor, is set to expire in July of 2013, Hennessy said.

“It was extraordinary circumstances,” he said, referring to the state’s $3.5 billion deficit. “We said we would pay that for two years, and not pass it on to ratepayers.”

But if the tax is not sunsetted Dominion will pass that cost on to ratepayers, Hennessey said. Millstone Power Station, which is owned by Dominion, is Connecticut’s largest producer of energy, so that will mean an increased cost in electrical rates, he said.

“The governor has been good to us so far, and has kept his word,” he said. “And we hope to continue that relationship.”

Last year the state legislature also proposed a bill that would have increased , although it eventually failed. Malloy said he would have not signed the bill if it reached his desk.

Editor's Note: The original article said the cost per kilowatt hour in Connecticut is $17.33. The actual cost is 17.33 cents per kilowatt hour.

I suspect this governor will succumb to the demand by Millstone.
Their taxes should have been increased given their wind-fall profits and that this site is a cash-cow for their other operations outside CT. This is, if what's happening elsewhere in the nation and world, a dying form of energy production (the sheer cost, the fact it must be subsidized by tax payers which goes directly into the pockets of Dominian executives, and that on the open market there are NO takers, makes this an unsustainable means of producing energy...and then there's the security and associated health issues which are enormous). Whether, like the tobacco industries denial for years regarding the connection between smoking and cancer, we have the empirical evidence to support it, one can only state emphatically, that energy is a monoply because it is, like water and food, an absolute need. It should not be in the hands of profiteers.

Once again, ratepayers watch your wallets. We all know that once Hartford gets its hands into anyones pocket, they are not going to let go.The word sunset has no meaning to those in Hartford. If Millstone or anyone believes that the tax will just go away as promised, think again.

I suggested this idea at least 6 months ago- watching the city council meetings over time I thoughtRead More "how arrogant this guy is"- he doesn't feel our pain so he probably doesn't live in NL- someone should have caught onto this a couple of years ago- Again I say, if you want to work for the city of NL you MUST live in the city of NL- otherwise you really don't care what happens here- you're not really invested in our city- you can't take a paycheck and run to a nice suburban town where taxes are lower than NL-

This is very clear Jeff Smith is a liar! Either he lied about living in New London, or he lied onRead More his political contribution forms. Does it really matter when or about what he lied? NO he is still a liar. Jeff Smith apparently has registered to vote in New London yet his vehicle is registered in Windham, state law dictates that he has 30 days to change his registration to his town of residence. Jeff Smith has no respect for the laws of this state. Which is true the car registration or the voter registration? Jeff smith is in violation of the law either way. The city council president was made aware of this when Kathleen spoke to the council. What will council president Passero do about this? Nothing is the talk around town. Passero is taking his marching orders from the mayor, the mayor likes Jeff Smith, he will spin the numbers however the mayor tells him. Passero has no choice he has made his deal with the devil. Jeff Smith is the person with his hands on the money in the city and he is not an honest man! The saga of the Whaling City gets worse and worse.

The mayor and council president will lie and cheat to protect the mayor's unqualified and dishonestRead More people. The council and the council leadership is supposed to act as a check and balance in this new form of government. Mr. Smith is one of those dishonest people. It is sad that this person can be so dishonest and that the so called leaders in the community back the dishonest person rather than standing up for the taxpayers and people that really do live here and pay taxes. As a finance director Mr. Smith knows the importance of the proper tax town for vehicles, so he cannot claim ignorance. Is he is breaking the law because the taxes in Windham are lower or because he truly lives in Windham?
