This Week in New London, August 1-7

Some computer problems are holding up the official weekly roundup of events from , but I’m going to give a Patch version based on what the organization has posted. There are a few options tonight, starting with the second Bonsai concert at 6 p.m. at the Violin Training Gymnasium, accessible via the rear stairway at 300 State Street. For a $5 parking fee, you can check out a magic show on the boardwalk at 7 p.m. And the Summer Flickers series at heads into August with an 8 p.m. showing of Wall-E.

As always, you can find a good hodgepodge of cultural events in New London. Hygienic Art’s regular first Thursday poetry night begins at 7 p.m., and this month the guest of honor is Robert Frost Medal winner Marilyn Nelson. Saturday is the last day for an exhibit of work by at . The Lobster Players display the results of 24 hours of working to create a series of short plays with an 8 p.m. performance on Sunday at Evans Hall at . Continuing exhibits include “Latin: Who Is? What Is?” at the , “Urban Jungle” at , the Plain Air exhibit at , and the work of at the .

In the music world, the regular Bad Manners “Bassment Thursday” starts at 9 p.m. at the with the Swagger Jackers and continues into the early morning hours with music and DJs; cover is $5. The Oasis Pub also brings in the Old Tire Swingers for a 9:30 p.m. show on Saturday. Christine Ohlman and Rebel Montez perform with Karl Kelly at the Hygienic Art Park at 7 p.m. on Saturday

If you’d prefer to get outside, it’s your second-to-last weekend to check out the . Runners set out from Ocean Beach Park at 9 a.m. on Saturday for the , and could certainly use some support along the 11.6 mile course. And baseball with an 1860s feel gets started at 11 a.m. on the same day as the Thames Base Ball Club faces off against the Hartford Dark Blues at .

has a couple of fun events for the kids. Register now for an activity on “creating your zombie alter-ego” at 4 p.m. on Thursday. Open to children in grades six and up, the event brainstorms a history and look for such a monster and makeup artists will turn a volunteer into a member of the walking dead. At 10:30 a.m. on Friday, live owls will be on display as part of the regular special morning event.

Finally, you can stock up your kitchen with fresh food by checking out the wares at the Field of Greens Farmers Market from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on , or trying the wines and cheeses at the weekly tasting event from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Dominic Nocerino, Jr. will also visit the store from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on the same evening to meet with visitors.
