Lawrence & Memorial Hospital Gets Donation From Sails Up 4 Cancer

Organization donates $10,000 toward construction of cancer center in Waterford

Representatives from a Mystic organization will donate $10,000 toward the establishment of a new cancer center on Thursday.

Sails Up 4 Cancer in the lobby at 2 p.m. on Thursday. The money will go toward the establishment of the , currently under construction off Parkway South in Waterford. L&M is partnering with the Dana-Farber Cancer Center in Boston on the project, which is scheduled to open in the fall of 2013.

Sails Up 4 Cancer was founded in 2011 by Bob Davis, who twice survived cancer and wanted to combine his support for finding a cure with a love of sailing. The nonprofit organization is "dedicated to funding research in the education, prevention, and cure for all types of cancer through the art and enjoyment of sailing."

Since its inception, Sails Up 4 Cancer has held two significant events. A marine art show, Canvases for a Cause, featured over 35 artists and will return to Mystic in March. The organization also held an annual regatta on June 24.
