Oil news carried numerous dismal headlines on Friday afternoon about how the surge in prices may hurt modest economic growth in the United States. CBS News says the cost of oil has increased 12 percent in the past six weeks and 15 percent since last year, and that the trend could cost the American economy $35 billion by the end of the year if it continues. Tensions with Iran continue, with Reuters saying Western leaders are open to an Iranian offer to discuss its nuclear program but also suspicious about whether the move is attempting to buy time in order to complete a nuclear weapon.

The price for a gallon of regular grade gasoline has once again made a small uptick, with the average price increasing two cents since Monday to $3.84 in the state and three cents to $3.50 in the national average, according to ConnecticutGasPrices.com. The cheapest reported Connecticut station as of Friday afternoon was $3.53, at an Exxon in Durham.

New London prices stay on the better side of the state average, with the lowest reported price coming in at $3.73 at the 7-Eleven on Broad Street. The Cumberland Farms on Montauk Avenue is the next most economical option at $3.76. The Citgo and Sunoco stations on Williams Street put their price a penny higher.

Groton prices start at $3.79, available at the Mobil on Route 12. This is followed by $3.83 at the Hess on Route 12 and $3.85 at the Sunoco on Shennecossett Road. The BJ's on Cross Road remains the best Waterford option at $3.73, followed by the Bestaway and Sunoco on Boston Post Road at $3.79.
