Fill The Spot: Suggestions For Campo's Furniture

New London Office of Planning and Development feedback on ideas for the Bank Street complex

Last week, we asked you what you thought should at the corner of Bank Street and Truman Street. The family-run business closed in 2008, after 72 years of operation, and has been vacant ever since. The Londregan Commercial Real Estate Group is offering to sell the three buildings together or separately.

We got a couple of suggestions when we posted the inquiry on Facebook. The idea of bringing in a specialty food chain has been floated a few times, and a proposal to set up a Whole Foods or Trader Joe's on the site got a few thumbs up. Another suggestion was a new space for the Whaling City Boxing gym.

Shelly Briscoe, land use assistant with the , says the buildings lie within the general commercial district.

"All suggested uses appear to be permitted either approved administratively if operating between the hours of 6 a.m. and 11 p.m. and no alcohol is being sold at the grocery stores," says Briscoe. "A special permit issued by the Planning and Zoning Commission would need to be obtained if Trader Joe's or Whole Foods wanted to sell alcohol and/or operate before 6 a.m. and after 11 p.m."

Briscoe also notes that parking requirements would have to be met through the zoning enforcement officer or Planning and Zoning Commission. Otherwise, the applicant would have to seek a variance.
