The Portuguese Fisherman has closed, leaving a vacant building in Hodges Square

A restaurant that served as a rallying point for several neighborhood revitalization meetings has closed down.

recently vacated the building at 405 Williams Street. One of five restaurants in the Hodges Square neighborhood, the business focused on breakfast and won acclaim in online reviews as having fair prices and generous servings. A sign in the building still asks patrons to excuse the chaos, as the dining space was in the midst of a renovation.

The restaurant hosted a number of community conversations on the , , and East New London in general. It also hosted some events looking back on the neighborhood's past as well. Charles Read, whose , held several book signings there.

The restaurant is located along a busy road leading into I-95 and in a cluster of businesses including hair salons, restaurants, and gas stations. What would you like to see at this spot?
