Fill The Spot: 227 Bank Street

The lettering above this Bank Street storefront still bears the business of Bank Street Pawn, but the shop has recently departed from New London.

The idea of a pawn shop was originally rejected as a proposed way to fill the spot. The Planning and Zoning Commission turned down an applicant seeking to change the use of the space from retail to a pawn shop in 2006.

Prior to this use, the storefront hosted a couple of Italian bakeries. In the early 1980s, Giuliano's Bakery claimed to have the "freshest and finest baked goods in the area" with breads, pastries, cookies, and more. This was later supplanted by Roberto's Bakery with pizza, calzones, breakfast sandwiches, and more.

This site is next door to the Kente Cultural Center entrance and a short distance from the Gallery at Firehouse Square. What do you think would work well here? Let us know in the comments.
