A free reception open to the public will be held on Thursday, August 23, 2012 to kick off New London County’s 2012 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer campaign. Breast cancer survivors and community members with an interest in the breast cancer issue are encouraged to attend. The Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk of New London County will be held on Sunday, October 28, 2012 at Harkness Memorial State Park in Waterford, CT.
As the American Cancer Society’s premier event to fight breast cancer, Making Strides is a noncompetitive 5K walk that raises awareness and funds to help fight for every birthday threatened by breast cancer in every community. Making Strides is the largest network of breast cancer awareness events in the nation, uniting more than 270 communities to fund the fight against breast cancer. In 2011, approximately 3,280 cases of breast cancer were diagnosed in Connecticut alone. One of every two women newly diagnosed with breast cancer turns to the Society for help and support. The funds raised from Making Strides enables the American Cancer Society to provide free resources and programs to these women, as well as support groundbreaking research to find, prevent, treat and cure breast cancer and ensure access to mammograms for women who need them.
Since 1993, 8 million walkers have raised more than $450 million to help save lives by helping people stay well, get well, find cures, and fight back. In 2012, the American Cancer Society is commemorating 20 years of saving lives through Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, and celebrating the more than 2.6 million breast cancer survivors who will see another birthday this year, thanks in part to Making Strides supporters.
