This Week in New London, Sept. 7-13

It’s getting a little cooler and rainier after that long hot summer, but there are still quite a few selections by for upcoming events. Let’s start with the collection of things going on tonight. The is hosting a steak dinner from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., at $13 per person. At 6 p.m., you have your choice of a hearing on proposed changes to Shore Line East service at the or a free mini-concert at the Violin Training Museum at 300 State Street. If the weather improves, the series continues at with Hedwig and the Angry Inch, starting at 8 p.m.

Music kind of takes the cake this week, especially on Friday. On that day, Daphne Lee Martin and Raise the Rent come to the on Parade Plaza from noon to 1 p.m. as part of the Previews on Parade series. holds their regular wine tasting from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., making for a nice stop before the evening performances. At Port n Starboard in , plenty of tunes will be playing from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. for the seventh annual . Mystic Bowie, so rudely interrupted by a hurricane in their attempt to close out the Hygienic Art Park’s summer music season, hopes to return there from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. for a “punky reggae party.” On Saturday, the comes to the from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. If the turntable beats aren’t your thing and you have the pipes to sing (and are in grade two through eight), Voices on the Thames is auditioning for their youth choir. These start at 9 a.m. at the . Finally, the children’s music group Sunny Morning La La plays their regular set at the at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday.

History buffs get a surprising number of things to check out this time around. At 1 p.m. on Sunday, the puts on a play about one of New London’s most famous (or infamous) events. “The Enemy Within: Arnold Returns Home” revolves around the interaction between the traitor Benedict Arnold and a captured Continental soldier during the battles at Fort Trumbull and Fort Griswold during the Revolutionary War. Tickets are $15, or $10 for museum members and children 14 and under. On Monday, Commissioner Daniel C. Esty of the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection visits as part of the “commissioner in your corner” series. Esty is scheduled to arrive at 3 p.m., and residents are invited to meet him and attend a 5 p.m. Q&A session. Finally, city historian Sally Ryan returns to the Public Library of New London to start another six-week series on the city’s history. The sessions are free, though registration is recommended, and they run from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Monday.

Don’t think we’ve left the city’s artists (or aspiring artists) out. The Public Library of New London has a drawing class for “absolute beginners” from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday. On Saturday, Hygienic Art debuts their “The F-stops Here” show of juried black and white photography with a 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. reception. The same evening, welcomes visitors to a 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. reception showcasing the pen and ink illustrations of Matthew Goldman.
