Beanfield War, Art Night, and Labor Day Concert

This Week in New London, Aug. 31 to Sept. 6

School is back in session, the days are getting shorter, and Labor Day, that unofficial summer-ending landmark, is right around the corner. On the other hand, three-day weekend and there are still plenty of things to do. has recommended these events for the upcoming week.

Art is the main focus, as the first Friday of the new month means New London Art Night comes downtown. Between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m., galleries will have their doors open to show their current exhibits and perhaps offer you some refreshments. Musical performers will also be showing their talent throughout town. At , a class will be running from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. that evening; bring your favorite beverage and $35 (art supplies are all included) and learn how to replicate a masterpiece and take it home with you. The gallery also holds a special opening for the “Neverland” exhibit of artist and photographer , 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday. belatedly gets in on the game as well, having a reception from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday to showcase the comic artwork of Bradley Sheridan.

On the musical side of things, Brant Taylor and Friends bring a collection of country, blues, and classic rock to the Carousel Club at 33 Golden Street on Thursday; the show starts at 8 p.m. If you prefer to dance with your music, you may want to check out the Milonga tango party at the . Fifteen dollars gets you a dance lesson and some refreshments, starting at 7 p.m. Previews on Parade keeps up its visits to the , with Ken Atkins & The Honky Tonk Kind visiting the plaza from noon to 1 p.m. on Friday. The Coast Guard Band celebrates Labor Day, the end of summer, and the barque Eagle’s 75th anniversary with a free open air concert at on Sunday. The concert starts at 3 p.m., with the program including the 1812 Overture complete with cannons from the Artillery Company of Newport, R.I. Finally, you can always find a jazz set to close out the evening at Bean and Leaf from  8 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Monday.

To sum up the rest of the events, you can catch a movie tonight at the as the Summer Flickers series continues. The Milagro Beanfield War, a drama about water rights in the American Southwest, starts at 8 p.m. The park also hosts a First Thursday poetry reading at 7 p.m. on Thursday, with Jon Anderson sharing his work. At the event at , Lee Poplett offers healing touch sessions for $15 and $30; it runs from noon to 4 p.m. Finally, the tours of the Arboretum are still going on. Catch one at 2 p.m. on Sunday, starting outside the Olin Science Center.
