The Warrior Kali K.O. Mequinonoag Reis displays Class at Carnage in Canton By Christopher Annino

The rumble of war drums sounded in the back ground. The drums ricocheted throughout canton. The native born warrior Kali K.O. Mequinonoag Reis https://www.facebook.com/KOKaliReis  was ready to embark upon the challenge that was bestowed on her.  Kali’s appearance truly resembles that of the many generations of Native American warrior ancestors before her.

On Saturday May 3rd Big Six Entertainment  http://www.bigsixboxingacademy.com/ had the stage set for the first ever MMA/ Boxing hybrid event Carnage In Canton at the Irish Cultural Center. Some of the fighters that fought that night were MARK DELUCA, JAY KELLY, VINNIE CARITA,PAUL  GONSALVES, DONNIE PALMER, GERALD SCHIFONE, DAVID WILSON, FREDDY SANCHEZ, TRAVIS DEMKO, and JEAN PIERRE AGUSTIN

Kali K.O. Mequinonoag Reis and were on the card to go against fellow female welterweight Marva Dash. Prior to the match at the weigh in Marva did not show any respect toward her opponent Kali K.O. Reis “She was very disrespectful to the sport and blew me a kiss during weight in. I think she was so nervous she didn’t know what to do or say I didn’t find the kiss flattering at all.”

Along with the drumming which was provided by the Canadian based drum group The Lone Cry Singers https://www.facebook.com/LoneCrySingersPEI  Don Barnaby a Native American dancer led Kali to the ring as he danced to the rhythm of the warrior’s music during her entrance to the ring that night. “I always wanted to come out to live drum music, it helped put me in the right mental state of mind it definitely helped me with the motivation” Kali also added “I also enjoy walking out to the native American music group “A Tribe Called Red’s” song Electric Pow Wow. Accompanying her to the ring was her extended tribe called “Team Misfit” which consisted of Ernest “Tuna” Shelton and bantamweight champion Shelly Vincent, and her manager Mary Del Pino.

As soon as the bell clanged Kali K.O. controlled the match like a puppet master by manipulating Marva’s every movement. Kali fought Dash hard and demonstrated great respect toward her opponent who didn’t show the same for her. Because Marva couldn't out fight Kali she violated boxing’s code of ethics when she had placed Kali in a headlock. As a result Marva was disqualified and Kali got the win however Marva put a damper on what could have been a good fight. Marva who is from Bridgeport, Ct lived up to her reputation as being nothing but a simple minded brawler from Bridgeport.

I met up with Kali after the fight and she said “Despite the win I need to work on throwing more punches and not waiting as much. I am more a counter puncher I wait a little too much to get my grove on in a fight I need to be more aggressive" she later added “I am ready for anyone who is ready to fight me in my weight class I am trying to go bigger I would like a re match with Tory Nelson.”

Both Kali and fellow Misfit Teammate Shelly “Shelitosway” Vincent continue to train despite their accomplishments.  “Shelly and I work on strength and conditioning. Peter Manfredo critiques my boxing. I learned it takes patience to find a style and what type of fighter that I am. I always had confidence I just was never sure how to use my talent.” Kali might be fighting on July or end of August. However her training partner and world Bantamweight champion Shelly will be boxing at the Mohegan Sun May 31st for ticket info contact Shelly Vincent https://www.facebook.com/shellyshelitosway.vincent?fref=ts
