Bone crunching action and spine tingling in your face aggressiveness is Shoreline Roller Derby!  They skate with passion and intensity.  They don’t make a million dollars to play this sport but their love for the game is uncanny. It’s the fastest sport on two feet and is one of the most dangerous sports to participate in. It is the only sport that maintains good sportsmanship while the opponents dispense brutality on each other. You win by dodging human walls and carefully strategizing your next move  but it boils down to who wants to win the most. It is a game that is strongly based on how much heart you have I entered in this world a skeptic but after watching the female athletes from Shoreline Roller Derby in Groton, Ct http://www.shorelinerollerderby.com/ I am now hooked. They are the real thing and are way better than any sport I have either participated in or watched.

Roller derby began in 1935 in Chicago Illinois and is now played worldwide with over 1,200 different clubs. WHAT IS ROLLER DERBY AND HOW IS IT PLAYED? Roller derby is played by two teams of five members simultaneously skating counterclockwise on a circuit track. Each team designates a scoring player (the "jammer"); the other four members are "blockers." One blocker can be designated as a "pivot"—a blocker allowed to become a jammer in the course of play. The jammer wears a helmet cover bearing two stars; the pivot wears a striped cover; the remaining members' helmets are uncovered. The bout is played in two periods of 30 minutes. Point scoring occurs during "jams": plays that last up to two minutes. During a jam, points are scored when a jammer on a scoring pass (every pass a jammer makes through the pack after the initial pass) laps members of the opposing team. Each team's blockers use body contact, changing positions, and other tactics to assist its jammer to score while hindering the opposing team's jammer. Certain types of blocks and other play are violations; referees call penalties and require violators to serve time in a penalty box.

 “In November 2011 we had our first official game and win against Strong Island Derby Revolution out of Long Island New York. Roller derby is very empowering, athletic and here at Shoreline it’s a family who helps each other” said President Mizhell of Shoreline Roller Derby. In 2013 they became eligible for an apprenticeship for the women’s flat track derby association (WFTDA).

Their place of practice is non-other than Galaxy Roller Rink in Groton Connecticut because they are out of this world amazing, which is also where they hold their events check out their website http://www.shorelinerollerderby.com/  The teams that compete with Shoreline Roller Derby are The Salty Broads, The Bella Donna’s, Steam Queens, Burlesque Bruisers, and Underskated Knock Outs. Their class A team are the Salty Broads and their class B team are the Bella Donna’s.  TOMORROW 27th of October there will be a roller derby bout at Galaxy Roller Rink doors open at 6:30 get there early because tickets are going fast.  Proceeds from 50/50 raffle will be donated to the Raheem Carter scholarship foundation.
