Team Go Sox Wins Whaling City Film Project With "The Golden Grinder Cup."

Six teams had four days to shoot and edit, but in the end, there could be only one.

Neff Productions, in association with SECT Film, Downtown New London Assoc. and the New London Film Commission, are proud to announce the winner of the  2013  Whaling City Film Project.

Six teams signed up to script, shoot, edit and score a short film within a four day period. Five teams successfully finished and turned in their film on time.  The films were screened at the El ‘N’ Gee on Oct 10. Viewers voted to determine the winner of the audience choice award. And the winner of Best Film and Audience Choice is ... Team: Go Sox!

The team’s genre was Mockumentary and the title was “The Golden Grinder Cup”.  Team Go Sox included a couple of ringers, namely Kate Harkness and Brett Van Egmond, both of whom are 2013 RISD graduates who studied Film/Animation/Video with a concentration in Live Action.

"I loved revisiting familiar places from my childhood and seeing them in a new way. Everyone we worked with from New London was friendly and helpful.  It was wonderful working with my family—my moms, grandmother, cousins, uncle and long time family friends—we all had so much fun," said Harkness.

"The cast was amazing," said Van Egmond. "They just dropped everything and were totally 'in it to win it.' I'm new to New London and so I really enjoyed connecting with the film community here and discovering some of the city's hidden gems, like the Old Mill, and that fantastic mini-golf course at Ocean Beach."

The concept for the Whaling City Film Project is simple yet quite challenging. Film teams had four days to script, shoot, edit and score a short film with a running time between 4 - 7 minutes. Each team was assigned a random genre and given certain criteria that had to be included in each film. This year, they had to include a grinder as a prop, a character named Benny, and a line of dialogue: "Bet you can't get that whole thing down."

All film team members had to be volunteers. The only tasks they were allowed to do before the contest were to assemble crew members and actors, secure equipment and to scout and secure locations for filming. All creative work had to take place in the four days allotted.

And now for the moment you've all been waiting for ... here's a link to the winning film: http://vimeo.com/76481329.
