This Week in New London, July 17-23

The visual and performing arts are taking precedence this week on the New London Main Street events page and New London Patch calendar.

New shows are coming in at Expressiones and Spirit Gallery, while the Lyman Allyn Art Museum debuts a new exhibit. The museum starts things off with a reception at 5:30 p.m. on Friday for sculptor Kitty Wales’ “Lionfish;” it’s free for members and $5 for non-members. Expressiones has an opening reception and artist’s talk for painter Walter Guerra Ostolaza’s “Matriarchs and Mean Girls” at 6 p.m. on Saturday, the same date and time that Spirit Gallery introduces photographer Beth Claire’s “Alter Ego.” Ongoing exhibits include the a display on the Frank L. McGuire Maritime Library at the Custom House Maritime Museum, “Roger Tory Peterson & Me” at the Gallery at Firehouse Square,  “Passion Discipline Intuition Intellect” collaboration at Hygienic Art, and Aleksandr Trachishin’s work at Studio 33.

The Garde Arts Center continues its summer partnership with the Missoula Children’s Theater. They’re in the midst of rehearsals for Rapunzel this week, with performances of the show at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday; tickets are $10. The third week of the program starts Monday, and anyone interesting in having their child participate in a performance of Pinocchio can contact the Garde for more information. Meanwhile, the Flock Theatre starts a new run of shows with Oedipus Rex, with performances at 7 p.m. from Thursday through Sunday at the Connecticut College Arboretum; tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for students.

The Rivergods headline the latest Hygienic Art Park summer music performance on Saturday, with The Proud Flesh and Ivory Bills joining in; the concert starts at 7 p.m. on Saturday. The New London-based 7th Regiment offers a free show on Sunday, visiting the field at New London High School at 4:30 p.m. And Bulkeley House Saloon continues its “Common Ground” open mic series at 8 p.m. every Wednesday.

The Public Library of New London and Hygienic Art Park again offer a chance for a double feature on Wednesday, with To Kill A Mockingbird showing at 5 p.m. at the library and Repo Man starting at 8 p.m. at the park. The library also shows Muppet Treasure Island at 4 p.m. on Thursday.
