Italian Vibrations, Business After Hours, Messages From Beyond

This Week in New London, April 10-16

It’s back to an art dominant week in New London. There are plenty of classes and exhibits for you to check out on New London Main Street’s events calendar.

At the Provenance Center, the guided discussions on art topics wrap up tonight with a talk on performance, conceptual, and time-based art; this begins at 6:30 p.m., and the cost to attend is $15. The gallery has also opened the exhibit “Italian Vibrations,” a collaboration of six Italian-born artists. At the nearby LQM Gallery, a live model figure drawing group meets at 7 p.m. on Saturdays; it is $5 for attend. Recently owned exhibits include “Northern Moods: Paintings of Nova Scotia” at the Gallery at Firehouse Square and “From New London To Rome” at Studio 33.

There are a few special events from the Chamber of Commerce of Eastern Connecticut.  A “business after hours” event starts at 5:30 p.m. tonight at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital, welcoming local residents to network with businesses and entrepreneurs in the area; it’s $10 for members and $15 for non-members, with a $5 walk-in fee. The chamber also holds a ribbon cutting to welcome Monte Cristo Bookshop to the business scene at 5 p.m. on Saturday.

It’s a quieter week in music, but the organization has highlighted the coffeehouse tunes. Washington Street Coffee House welcomes Steafan Hanvey for a live set at 7 p.m. on Friday, and Richard Zack makes his regular appearance at Bean and Leaf an hour later. Bean and Leaf also has regular shows by Sunny Morning La La at 10:30 a.m. on Sundays and the Jazz Trio at 8 p.m. on Mondays.

In other events, the Garde Arts Center welcomes Lisa Williams for her show “Messages From Beyond” at 8 p.m. on Saturday. The program, which was delayed from February due to the nor’easter, starts with a pre-show psychic fair for ticketholders at 5 p.m.; tickets to the show are $54. And until May 8, the Public Library of New London has nature programs at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday with speakers from the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center.
