"In the Pink" Celebrates the Beauty, Strength and Healing Power of Women

Galleries Collaborate with the Breast Health Task Force of Southeastern CT to Raise Awareness for Breast Cancer.

Unless you’ve been hiding in a cave for the last few weeks you’ve seen all of the pink and all of the ribbons and you know it's Breast Cancer Awareness month.  It’s a time to not only bring awareness to the disease but to remember and honor lost loved ones and help those currently afflicted with breast cancer to heal. For most, even after triumphing over cancer the healing isn’t over; for many it never stops.

An effective way to self-heal and heal others is to create art inspired by an affliction or as a positive occupation while afflicted. The collaboration of over 50 artists, five galleries and members of the Breast Health Task Force of SECT that produced the sixth annual “In the Pink” brought to New London a great display of art that celebrates the strength, beauty and healing power of women.

“The Night of the opening the healing was palpable and powerful,” says Maurene Kennedy, curator of the branch of the show. She painted her own contribution to the show, “Journey,” while on chemo therapy. She also collaborated with artist Russ Sheets to create a resin sculpture of a torso with a pink jewel where her own breast cancer was located.

This year’s gallery and merchant participation was amazing with five galleries and numerous storefronts participating in the event. That’s up from just two galleries ( and TSETSE) last year and just one gallery for the four years prior. This year's participants included Hygienic Art, the TSETSE Gallery, the , and the .

As remarkable as the growth of the event was this year, many of the coordinators and gallery owners want more. Nadesha Mijoba of Provenance Center would like to see more merchant participation and better coordination between the galleries for next year. Much of the credit for the advancement of the annual event can be credited to Diane Pezzolesi and Sandy Calabro of Breast Health Task Force who were responsible for the coordination of most of the activities relative to the event.
