“We’re taking stuff right up until the last minute,” said Andrew Bell, the organizer of the Screening Room and creative director of the Filmworks division of . “You got it, we’ll take it.”

The Screening Room is similar to the Salon des Independants art show, which is a central piece to Hygienic XXXIII, in that it is not judged and does not award prizes. Rather, people are encouraged to submit short films of half an hour or less, animations, music videos, experimental films, and other videos to share. Bell said submissions for the event come in from around the United States.

Bell estimated that he has about a couple of dozen films right now, but said people can submit a piece for the screening up until Saturday. He said submissions may be on DVD or computer file, and said he hopes to get a sizable crowd due to the Exchange’s proximity to the Salon.

One event that correlates with The Screening Room will take place at a later date. On Feb. 1, the documentary will air at 8 p.m. at the . It will be followed by a discussion with filmmakers Eric Brice Swartz and Sarah Christine Bolton.

Cabaret Extraordinaire

Bill Saunders and Nancy Shea return to run the Cabaret Extraordinaire, making this the third year they have organized the event.

“They didn’t have anybody for this year so we kind of stepped in again,” said Shea.

Shea said the Cabaret showcases more unusual performances, ranging from folk to comedy to puppet shows to vaudeville. She said she thought the location this year was a good venue for the show, as it is an intimate space with two stages allowing acts to change out while the Cabaret “house band”—Dr. Caterwaul’s Cadre of Clairvoyant Claptraps—plays the act changes.

“The basic rule is if you want to put it in front of an audience, we want to take it. Your willing to perform is what it’s all about,” said Saunders.

Shea said this year’s lineup was organized mostly through Facebook. She said the show is constantly in flux, as some acts have to drop out and others come in at a later time.

“We’re really hoping for a couple more people to come in at the last minute,” she said.

The lineup for the Cabaret as of Tuesday evening:

  • 7:40: Music by Dr. Caterwaul's Cadre of Clairvoyant Claptraps
  • 8:10: The Amazing Andy, juggling and more...
