Hair, For Adam's Sake, The Essence Of Intention

This Week in New London, April 24-30

As April comes to an end, so too do a few art exhibits in New London’s galleries. But it also means a few new musical performances are bringing us into May.

New London Main Street has more on these features and other things to do in their list of things to do on the end of the month calendar.

The Garde Arts Center hosts two musical performances this week, starting with an Oasis Room performance of the T.S. Monk Quartet. The son of legendary jazz musician Thelonious Monk leads this band, which takes the stage at 8 p.m. on Friday; tickets are $45. The theater’s Broadway series continues on Sunday with Hair, which has performances at both 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.; tickets are $60. And Writer’s Block Ink holds a tribute to late founding member Morgan Penn from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday at the organization’s 446 Colman Street location.

“Canvases for a Cause” returns to the Gallery at Firehouse Square from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday. The special one-day exhibit features artwork from 35 artists; suggested admission is $25, with proceeds to benefit Sails Up 4 Cancer and Lawrence + Memorial Hospital’s new cancer center. In new shows, the Provenance Center opens “The Essence of Intention,” a display of photography by David Fryburg, with a reception from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday. Lori McClain will visit Studio 33 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday to discuss her work with sea glass. And the Custom House Maritime Museum welcomes silhouette artist Deborah O’Connor from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday; silhouettes are $30 or $15 for copies. It’s last call to check out the artist collaboration “Italian Vibrations,” which leaves the Provenance Center on Saturday, and the pastel and photography work of Marlene McLoughlin and Martha Wakeman, which has its last day at Studio 33 on Tuesday.

It’s also a pretty good week for New London’s history buffs. The Friends of Fort Trumbull start their 2013 season on Thursday by bringing in Central Connecticut State University professor Matthew Warshaurer to discuss the War of 1812; this meeting starts at 7 p.m. at the state park’s conference center. And Connecticut Landmarks, the Public Library of New London, and the New London County Historical Society come together on Sunday to debut For Adam’s Sake: A Family Saga in Colonial New England. This book by historian Allegra di Bonaventura explores the topics of family and slavery in colonial New London, and a lecture and book signing will take place at 2 p.m. at the library.
