It picks up right after the events of season four. It will be very loosely based on the fifth book in The Southern Vampire Mysteries series, Dead as a Doornail but will incorporate much more of the following books than the previous seasons have.

On August 11, 2011, HBO announced that True Blood had been renewed for a fifth season of 12 episodes, premiering on June 10, 2012.
