New London Salvation Army recognizes National Doughnut Day

Come down to Parade Plaza today to celebrate National Doughnut Day!

Bob Heel, director of emergency and disaster services at the Salvation Army, said the organization's canteen truck is on the plaza to commemorate the "Doughnut Lasses" who gave the treats to soldiers in World War I. The first National Doughnut Day took place in Chicago in 1938 to raise money during the Great Depression.

Each person who stops by can get one cup of coffee and one doughnut. Donations to the Salvation Army are also being accepted.
