VIDEO: New London Main Street Snaps Big Picture

For the sixth year, New London Main Street invited residents to Parade Plaza on Tuesday to take a group photo of the community.

Bence Strickland, president of New London Main Street, described the annual event as a symbolic way to bring New Londoners together as one city.

“We’re a diverse city, and to see everyone come together for one moment shows what we’re all about,” said Stickland.

This year’s photo gave special recognition to the Coast Guard due to the recent announcement that the service plans to build the National Coast Guard Museum on the New London waterfront. Coast Guard Academy cadets took part in the photo, and some participants held a “New London [heart] USCG” banner.

The first Big Picture took place in 2008 with about 50 people participating. The event has grown steadily, with 75 participants in 2009, 100 in 2010, 246 in 2011, and 438 in 2012. Local photographer Vincent Scarano has taken the picture each time.

New London Main Street hoped to break last year’s record, but chilly weather prevailed and the crowd was reportedly smaller this year. The number of participants is determined by counting the number of faces in the picture using Photoshop.
