The Daily Five: Call Me Ishmael! There's a Whale of a Tale at Mystic Seaport

Five things to know for Sunday, July 31.

1. If you liked the weather yesterday, you’re going to love it again today. The forecast is for mostly sunny skies, with a high of 80 degrees and an overnight low of 66. It’s likely to feel hotter than that though, thanks to 60 percent humidity during the day and 85 percent humidity at night. A 10 percent chance of rain increases to 20 percent overnight but don’t forget the sunblock, because the UV index will be very high at 9 today.

2. Well it’s over in Mystic instead of here in New London, but it still sounds rather interesting. You get to pay to read Moby Dick! Or at least listen to it, and enjoy some breakfast and birthday cake along the way. Mystic Seaport is reading Herman Melville’s novel cover to cover aboard the whaler Charles W. Morgan, starting at noon today and going through until noon tomorrow (Melville’s birthday). Cost is $25, or $23 for members.

3. Another busy day in the Connecticut College Arboretum. The regular free tours of the park start at 2 p.m. outside the Olin Science Center, and Flock Theatre puts on a production of William Shakespeare’s King Lear at 7 p.m.; tickets are $10.

4. Is it just me or does it seem like there are a lot of Vermont license plates in New London? The Skrimshander Articles takes a look at the Connecticut to Vermont journey today and ponders why so many Green Mountain State people, or at least their cars, end up down here.

5. Robert Taft, Republican U.S. senator from Ohio and son of President William Howard Taft, died on this day in 1953 at the age of 63.
