First place winner, East Lyme High School senior Morgan O'Toole, won a $1,000 scholarship for her entry, Diary of Joseph Lathrop, the news release says.
Her entry was a fictional piece, though based on the life of a real New London sailor.

Aidan James Quinn, a senior at , took home second place for his entry, My Personal Connection With African-American Maritime History, which told the story of his Cape Verdean ancesters, the release says.
Quinn received a $500 savings bond for his second place prize.
