New London Tube: The Boxing Mayor

You can find quite a few clips of Daryl Finizio on YouTube these days. Ever since he announced he was running for mayor in January, there have been uploads of public access television appearances, campaign events, endorsements, and official messages. Back in January when he , however, one of the first things I discovered when searching for information on the candidate was this video clip: Finizio in the third round of an amateur boxing bout.

Finizio, who with 2,185 votes out of 4,731 cast in the mayor's race, said in his January announcement that while he has lived in New London since July of 2010, he has been visiting the city frequently for the past six years. One place in New London he said he joined: , the boxing gym on Bank Street.

The video, from 2009, gives a ringside view of the future mayor as he takes a few punches and dishes out some of his own (there's probably a ).

I mentioned this video to Finizio when we met for the interview on his , and he joked that he wished it were a bit longer. I personally thought it looked like he was doing OK against his opponent, but it seems the better part of his performance came after the camera stopped rolling.

There were only 444 views as of this afternoon, along with one prescient comment posted one month ago: "The next Mayor of New London."
