New London Tube: Thames River Apartments Heart Health

Ledge Light Health District is a finalist in the Health Justice CT Challenge, seeking defibrillators and CPR courses for the Crystal Ave. high-rises

This week's pick for a New London-related video on YouTube asks for your support in improving the health of residents at the Thames River Apartments on Crystal Ave.

The Ledge Light Health District - with support from the , the Boys and Girls Club of Southeastern Connecticut, and the residents and "Teen Night" participants at the Thames River Apartments - put together this proposal for the Health Justice CT Challenge. The organization, which aims "to raise awareness about the issue of racial and ethnic health disparities" in Connecticut, is offering $10,000 to the proposed program receiving the most votes. The "TRA Heart Health" proposal is one of the top five finalists.

In the three-minute video, Ledge Light says a 2011 survey showed that 20 percent of the residents in the apartments have had a heart attack. The proposal seeks to install automatic electronic defibrillators in each of the apartment buildings and offer three CPR training and certification courses for any interested residents.
