New London Tube: Free Comic Book Day

Local author visits Sarge's Comics for annual event

If you didn't know about Free Comic Book Day, you were probably a little surprised last Saturday if you passed and saw a group of Star Wars villains (along with the Joker and a few other comic book or sci-fi characters) hanging out in front of the store entrance. Rest assured, we haven't been invaded by people from a galaxy far, far away. Sarge's puts on the event each year, putting on promotions and a few freebies and inviting people to dig out their costumes to attend.

Free Comic Book Day is also a chance to showcase some work from Connecticut's own comic book artists and sci-fi and fantasy writers. After the event, Melissa Damon shared this video of her own appearance at the store with her husband and a few friends. According to her website, Damon aspires to become not only a young adult novelist but also a photographer, songwriter, and designer. She also reveals that she's no stranger to the event:

"Every year since I was seventeen, I would dress up as a comic book or japanimation character for Free Comic Book Day at Sarges Comics in New London, Connecticut and get my picture taken with hundreds of people. I even made my own outfits and that of my friends each year. The only year I missed was 2011 because I was pregnant with my son and in the process of moving to my new house."

As for her aspirations, Damon can probably check off "young adult novelist" as completed, even if her first book won't be her last. In the video, she's promoting The Resurrection, the first book in a planned "Stalkers Trilogy." The story follows Katerina Rose de La Fontaine, a woman who awakes in an unfamiliar place with no clue to her past aside from dreams going back to the 1800s. And if that wasn't enough of a burden on poor Katerina, she also can't eat regular food and changes whenever she sees blood: "There is a beast stirring within me, and I cannot figure out what it is or how to control it."
