New London Tube: Coast Guard Chorale

Cadets bring beautiful tune to festive academy chapel

We all live within a few clicks of a federal service academy, a nuclear power plant, and a company that builds submarines for the Navy. It should come as no surprise that these are generally regarded as places where cameras are frowned upon. The here in New London is perhaps the most lenient in this regard - anyone is allowed to visit the campus to check out their concerts or sports games or other events if you can present a photo ID, and I've easily gotten permission to take pictures and video there - but a sign at the entrance still requests that you put your cell phone away.

The uploader of this week's choice for a YouTube video openly acknowledges that he's breaking that particular rule in shooting this short clip, uploaded on Dec. 7. "We are not allowed to shoot video inside, so this is the best we can do," the description says apologetically. We hope they could make an exception for this festive scene, showcasing the talents of the Coast Guard Academy Cadet Glee Club.

The hymn they're singing here is "We Are Singing, For The Lord Is Our Light," which is based on a South African song. Taking place inside the academy's chapel, the Christmas trees and candles make a nice complement to the angelic voices of the glee club. According to the academy's website, the glee club is made up of 40 men and women, chosen by audition.
