New London Tube: Beach Art

Found objects arranged in artistic form at Ocean Beach Park

Here's something about you probably already know, but if not let us enlighten you: the beach is open year-round. The gates don't close when it gets chilly, and you can still use the or book an event at the Port N Starboard convention center. There's an admission fee during the summer, but it's free to check out the beach in the off-season.

The trade-off, of course, is that it's not exactly sunbathing or swimming weather (unless you're doing the ). But you can still walk on the boardwalk or sand, fly a kite, watch the ferries go by, or try out any number of activities. As this week's YouTube pick shows, some people choose to do a bit of artwork.

How far this piece dates back is unclear. The video was uploaded on Jan. 8, but I noticed it when I paid a visit to the beach on New Year's Eve. It was located far from the eroding influence of the waves, up against the boardwalk near the GAM building.

It's a pretty nifty example of "found art." The entire thing seems to be made of items that have washed ashore, and you can spot driftwood, shells, cinder blocks, and garbage gathered together in a pleasing ensemble rather than strewn about the sand. It will only take you 16 seconds to get a look at this piece, and if you know anything more about it please let us know!
