New London Tube: A Holiday Recital

Students at the Thames Valley Music School perform a "Jingle Bells" duet

For all the buildup leading to Christmas, the holiday seems to vanish in an instant. The first Christmas songs sneak onto the radio on Black Friday, if not earlier, and swell to a crescendo in the days immediately before the holiday. You can find little else on the dial on December 25. As soon as the day ends, though, those songs are gone for another 11 months.

So hopefully today's choice for a New London scene on YouTube doesn't make you long for a return to the eggnog or wassail or fruitcake or any of the other Christmas traditions you may have enjoyed just four days ago. And hopefully you're not going to get annoyed that I chose a video with a Christmas theme after the holiday itself. There's a reason they call it the Twelve Days of Christmas, after all, and odds are you haven't gotten around to taking down your tree just yet.

This video showcases a performance from two girls at a Thames Valley Music School recital held on Dec. 11. The school is based at the Cummings Arts Center on the campus, with additional locations at the Lyme-Old Lyme Middle School and High School as well as Stonington High School. It also has quite an extensive set of programs, according to its website. Students of all ages can take part in orchestras, summer camps and programs, and private lessons for the piano and chorus as well as string, woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments.

Even if it does me crave a return to that Christmas vacation, I think this pair did quiet well and hope they keep learning the piano as they get older. What about you?
