Lynx Returns To New London On Wednesday

War of 1812 privateer replica makes grand arrival and will be on the waterfront for the Best BBQ Chef Competition

A ship built as a replica of privateers used in the War of 1812 will pay a visit to New London tomorrow and remain in port through the weekend.

The Lynx visited Waterfront Park last year for Halloween Town, and this year's visit will correspond with the third annual Best BBQ Chef Competition. The vessel, launched from Rockport, Me. in 2001, was named in honor of a blockade-running ship used in the War of 1812.

The Lynx is scheduled to arrive at 3 p.m. at City Pier. After a salute from its deck guns, it will be open for tours from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Tours continue from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday through Sunday, and the ship will sail on these days from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Tours are $5 for adults and $2 for children ages 12 and under, while sailing is $50 for adults and $25 for children 12 and under.

The eight-member crew will be in period dress for the grand entrance. The Lynx is a 122-foot square topsail schooner and operates as a sail training vessel through the Lynx Educational Foundation.

The Best BBQ Chef Competition runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Competitors will do their best to earn the top barbecue honor in the state, and cooking demonstrations and live entertainment will complement the event.
