Library Looking For Literary Lovebirds

Public Library of New London debuts speed dating event for book lovers

The Public Library of New London is looking for a few more bookworm singles help kick off an inaugural speed dating event on Thursday.

The library is hosting "Literary Speed Dating," an event designed to make young people aware of their services and play matchmaker for local singles. Two men and two women had signed up as of Monday afternoon, and a minimum of 10 are needed for the event to take place. It is currently scheduled to run from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Suzanne Maryeski, director of the library, said it is modeled on similar events that have taken place in libraries in larger cities. She said younger patrons are less likely to use the library's services, and in part the event promotes features such as wireless printing and downloadable e-books.

The speed dating is geared toward people ages 21 to 35, and participants are encouraged to bring a favorite book or recent read as a way to get aquainted with others. Singles will be paired up for five-minute periods and make a note of people they would like to meet again. The library will inform participants of any matches.

The event is free, and refreshments will be served. To register, call Maryeski at 860-447-1411, extension 5.
