eBay Tuesday: New London Sterling Spoon

Several landmarks appear on the handle of this item

There's got to be a spoon collector somewhere in New London. Here's a chance to get some local flavor in there.

This week's auction item is a sterling silver spoon offered by user peace235. Its estimated age is between 1900 and 1940, and it was made by Watson & Newell Co. This Attleboro, Mass. company produced silver items from 1880 to 1955. The company's souvenir spoon dies were transferred to J.T. Inman, which is still in the silver business today after 130 years (albeit without souvenir spoons on its list of products).

This particular spoon chooses John Winthrop Jr., the New London city seal, and the Soldiers and Sailors Monument to represent the city on the handle. Winthrop, of course, is best known as New London's founding father.
