Daily Five: "The Navy's Here!", Sankofa, More Snow

Five things to know for February 16

1. Occasional snow showers throughout the day with steadier snowfall in the evening, bringing another couple of inches of accumulation. Sunrise is 6:41 a.m., sunset is 5:24 p.m., and the temperature reaches 36 degrees during the day and falls to 21 overnight.

2. The Kente Cultural Center celebrates Black History Month today with Sankofa. Food, vendors, and arts and crafts are among the activities coming to the Bennie Dover Jackson Middle School from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

3. The off-Broadway production Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding comes to the Groton Inn and Suites tonight at 6:30 p.m. The show is a fundraiser for the Connecticut College lacrosse team and tickets are between $75 and $200.

5. On this day in 1940, sailors from the British destroyer Cossack raided the German tanker Altmark and freed 299 British prisoners of war. The incident, which took place in Norwegian waters, inspired the World War II rallying cry of “The Navy’s here!” after one of the prisoners shouted it during the rescue.
