Five things to know for April 8
1. Too bad this weather couldn't have shown up on Sunday. The forecast calls for a beautiful sunny day with a high temperature of 58 degrees. Clouds move in during the evening, with a small chance of showers late. Sunrise is 6:19 a.m., sunset is 7:22 p.m.
2. The 2014 budget process is underway. The first meeting of the Finance Committee starts at 4:30 p.m. tonight at City Hall.
3. The Public Library of New London continues its Books to Movies series with a screening of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants tonight. This starts at 5 p.m.

5. On this day in 1952, in the midst of the Korean War and with a labor strike looming, President Harry Truman ordered the Secretary of Commerce to seize the nation’s steel mills to ensure production of necessary munitions. The Supreme Court later found the action to be unconstitutional.
